Starz is expanding its reach into the growing market of Indonesia with the launch of premium streaming service Lionsgate Play.
The company has brought on a pair of executives to manage its new operations in the populous Southeast Asian country. Guntur Siboro has been hired as general manager and Gene Tamesis as vp of business development and partnerships. The pair will report to Rohit Jain, Lionsgate’s md of emerging markets and South Asia. Both of the new hires were most recently employed by HOOQ, the regional OTT player backed by Warner Bros and Sony that was shut down last year.
With a population of 260 million, Indonesia will become the newest territory added to the Starz global streaming footprint covering 55 countries.
“Indonesia is one of the fastest growing economies with a very young and globally connected population, and it has experienced huge growth in its digital economy owing to the surge of high-speed internet,” said Jain in a statement. “Against this backdrop, we saw a great opportunity for Starz to launch premium global content for Indonesian viewers, particularly given the scarcity of premium OTT platforms in the market.”
Lionsgate Play, a service co-created by Lionsgate India and Starz, is currently only available in India, where it offers consumer a collection of Hollywood content spanning blockbuster films and popular series. The service also develops and produces a diverse slate of Indian originals. In Indonesia, all of the content will be made available with Bahasa subtitles.
Added Guntur Siboro, the platform’s new Indonesia GM: “The Indonesian market has emerged as a key market for all global studios and streaming giants, owing to its population size, growing globalization, thriving media industry and tremendous growth in its local film industry. We look forward to expanding Lionsgate’s footprint in Southeast Asia and we are confident that our unique and exclusive content will generate a great response from Indonesian audiences.”
