“Yes, they got rid of the Christian religious symbols like snowflakes and snowmen. I think we all remember the story of when baby Jesus was visited by the Three Wise Frosties,” he joked during Wednesday’s episode of The Late Show. “I can see why people might be all frothed up about this. Now, Starbucks is completely devoid of any trace of the holiday besides the Christmas-tree ornaments, Advent calendar, CDs of Christmas music, Christmas-themed gift cards, Christmas cookies and giant displays of their Christmas Blend coffee.”

He added of the cup’s relatively plain design, “It’s just red and green, which obviously could represent anything: different types of bell peppers, two-thirds of a stoplight, a frog that was run over by a bus — anything!”
After screening a video of a patron who “tricked” a Starbucks employee into writing “Merry Christmas” on the cup by claiming the holiday greeting was his name, the host then debuted his version of a Christmas coffee cup.
“Don’t fight this: Give the customers a cup so crammed with Christmas, they’ll be picking tinsel out of their Yule Log for months,” said Colbert of his elaborate design, complete with a manger scene, ornaments, tinsel and sound effects — and an entire Christmas tree. “What a festive way to start my day.”
