Late night hosts took a moment to share their reactions to the Golden Globe nominations, which were unveiled Wednesday morning.
On The Late Show, Stephen Colbert congratulated the show’s bandleader Jon Batiste, who with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross was nominated for best original score for Soul. He also highlighted the fact that female directors made history with more noms than any other year, joking that it’s the greatest show of support since someone reportedly tried to change the Hollywood sign to read “Hollyboob.”
Colbert also mentioned the snubs of films such as Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, declaring, “Once again, Black filmmakers get the shaft.”
Over on The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon kicked things off with news of the awards. “This year’s Golden Globes should be exciting, because thanks to the pandemic people actually saw all of the nominees,” he said. “Seriously, even when they announced the nominees for best foreign film, I was like, ‘Holy crap, I know all of these.'”
He went on to note that Netflix “led the way” with 42 nominations. “Granted, it took them 10,000 movies and shows to get there, but still, impressive,” the late night host joked. “Honestly, it’s like winning roulette after putting chips on every number.” Fallon later said he isn’t surprised that Netflix had so many nominations, “especially with some of the new categories like ‘best show about an Emily in Paris.'”
“I’m just thankful we had Netflix during the pandemic,” said Fallon. “Without them it would have been like, ‘And the Golden Globe for best motion picture drama goes to Scoob!” He asked, “Seriously, who’s having a better year than Netflix? Even Purell is jealous.”
Noting Sacha Baron Cohen’s “great” nomination for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Fallon joked that his co-star, Rudy Giuliani, “is being given a lifetime impeachment award.”
