It was a tough day for Stephen Colbert, as the world watched President Barack Obama get sworn in for a second term.
Or was it his second term?
Colbert made the case on Monday’s episode of The Colbert Report that Obama has in fact become a three-term president.
“The president should be inaugurated on January 20,” Colbert said, reading from a copy of the U.S. Constitution.
He showed footage of Obama being officially sworn in during a private ceremony Sunday, as well as at the public ceremonial swearing in Monday on the National Mall.
“By taking [the oath] again today, Obama has made himself a three-term president, serving the second two terms consecutively,” Colbert said. “Now to get rid of him, we have to impeach him twice.”
Colbert was dismayed that one of the three Bibles “Hollywood-Hussein” Obama used during the ceremony belonged to Abraham Lincoln. He speculated Obama used the Bible simply to cash in on the popularity of Steven Spielberg’s film.
The comedian was able to take comfort by vowing to redouble his efforts to stop Obama’s agenda and swearing himself in on a giant stack of Bibles.
“I am re-inaugurating myself as commander in opposing the chief for an historic second term,” he said, posing proactively on the pile.
The Colbert Report airs at 11:30 p.m. ET on Comedy Central.
