Welcome back to Series Regular, The Hollywood Reporter‘s weekly podcast dedicated to diving deep into hit TV shows.
Every episode of Series Regular comes courtesy of Josh Wigler (that’s me!), taking a closer look at a new corner of the genre television space. At the podcast’s onset, Series Regular was all in on one thing and one thing only: Game of Thrones. After spending some time surveying a wide breadth of series, the podcast is once again stopping down to focus on a single drama — one that’s located in quaint Hawkins, Indiana.
Enter: Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers’ Netflix drama that stealthily launched in the summer of 2016, before quickly flipping the streaming service and the genre space at large upside down. The recipient of numerous Emmy and Golden Globe award nominations over the course of its first two seasons, Stranger Things unleashes its third round of 80s-set horrors upon the world in very short order, and in very festive fashion, dropping all eight episodes on July 4 — almost exactly three years after its initial debut, and roughly one and a half years after it last graced Netflix.
There’s a chance — a small change, but a chance — that Series Regular listeners will tune into the latest podcast without having actually seen an episode of Stranger Things. This week’s episode exists as a primer for them, as well as for those who were unable to go back and binge the existing 17 chapters before season three’s release. Don’t know the first thing about Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven or the vicious Demogorgon? Vaguely remember something about a Mind Flayer terrorizing Hawkins in season two? Actively trying not to think too hard about Eleven’s side-trip to Chicago, but still feel like you need to remember the gist? The Series Regular: Stranger Things primer will have you covered.
What’s more, if you’re hoping for some bare essentials about what’s ahead in season three, this week’s edition of the podcast is here with the intel. Need an overview of the new actors along for the newest Hawkins nightmare? As you wish. In the mood for a tour of the season’s key setting, the Starcourt Mall? Hop aboard the Series Regular schooner and get it done. And if you want to focus only on season-by-season information, you can do so with these handy time-codes: the season one primer begins at the 3:00 mark, the season two breakdown at the 12:00 mark, and season three wraps things up around the 15:45 mark.
Hear it all now on Series Regular. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast to never miss an episode. Follow Wigler on Twitter at @roundhoward, and send suggestions for future topics and questions to SeriesRegular@THR.com.
