How excited are viewers for Stranger Things to return, on a scale of one to 10? After watching the new trailer revealed at Comic-Con, the answer should be clear: “11.”
The Duffer Brothers and Netflix unleashed the Upside Down on Comic-Con attendees Saturday with a brand-new look at the second season of the 1980s-set thriller, debuting Oct. 27, just in time for Halloween. The series features returning stars Winona Ryder (Joyce Byers), David Harbour (Jim Hopper), Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) and Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas Sinclair), as well as an upgraded role for the person whose disappearance kick-started the whole show: Noah Schnapp as Will Byers.
In the first-season finale, Joyce and Hopper rescued Will from imprisonment in the Upside Down, a bleak world that exists simultaneously with our own world. But the nightmare wasn’t over; indeed, Will brought some of the nightmare back home, vomiting miniature monsters into his bathroom sink. In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, conducted in advance of production starting on season two, Schnapp expressed his desire to see Will take a darker, villainous turn following his return from the Upside Down. Did the young actor get his wish?
Sadly not: instead, it looks like Will is tormented by his experience. The trailer begins with the four boys playing Dragon’s Lair at an arcade. Will turns around and looks into the distance and sees signs of the Upside Down. When he swivels back to look at his friends, they’re all gone. All that’s left: the full-on Upside Down. Far in the horizon, a huge monster lurks. The world returns to normal, but these instances continue, and show no sign of slowing down.
The trailer features quick cuts of new characters (including Sean Astin in doctor scrubs running through a dark hallway), the kids dressed up for Halloween in Ghostbusters costumes, Eleven bursting back into reality, and more. Watch the trailer in the video below.
