Syfy is bringing San Diego’s Comic-Con International to the masses.
The NBCUniversal-owned cable network is set to a three-night primetime special from the massive convention this summer, it was announced Wednesday.
Syfy Presents Live From Comic-Con will air Thursday, July 21, through Saturday, July 23, at 8 p.m. ET and feature celebrity interviews, breaking news and behind-the-scenes reports from the many panels, parties and other events planned for the four-day event, which runs through Sunday, July 24.
Comic-Con, now going into its 47th year, has played host to some of the biggest TV and movie stars and has grown to more than 165,000 people in recent years. Badges for the festival have been known to sell out months in advance as comic book geeks and pop culture aficionados descend upon San Diego to get first looks at films like Star Wars and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice — two of the most recent blockbusters which screened early footage at the event in addition to welcoming the A-list stars and creators behind the properties. However, the news comes as Comic-Con prepares for new competition in 2017. Disney announced that its own convention, the D23 Expo, will take place July 14-16, 2017, in nearby Anaheim. (Comic-Con has historically taken place sometime in July.)
Wilshire Studios will produce Syfy Presents Live From Comic-Con, with Corin Nelson set as showrunner and executive producer.
“For nearly two decades, Syfy has been a mainstay at Comic-Con,” NBCUniversal Entertainment Networks president Chris McCumber said in a statement. “Each and every year, we can’t wait to get to San Diego to share our mutual fandom and passion for all things pop culture with our viewers. And this year, we’re thrilled to extend that immediate, first-hand access to those at home as well.”
Added Heather Olander, Syfy vp alternate series development and production: “Our goal with Syfy Presents Live From Comic-Con is to give everyone the experience of being on the convention floor, at the events, or just walking through the frenzied streets of [San Diego’s] Gaslamp District … with hundreds of thousands of their closest friends.”
