The WarnerMedia-backed streamer has handed out a straight-to-series order to Our Flag Means Death, a period comedy loosely based on the adventures of Stede Bonnet, a pampered aristocrat who abandoned his life of privilege to become a pirate. Created by showrunner David Jenkins, Waititi will exec produce and direct the pilot.
Waititi will turn his attention to the HBO Max series after he completes production on Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder, which he is writing and directing.
“A series concept like this jumps off the page and you can instantly envision every moment,” says Sarah Aubrey, head of originals at HBO Max. “David and Taika’s unique take on Bonnet’s rollicking misadventures on the high seas is sure to thrill and delight audiences everywhere.”
An episode count for the period comedy has not yet been determined. In addition to helming the pilot, Waititi will exec produce the series alongside Jenkins (TBS’ People of Earth) and Garrett Basch (FX’s What We Do in the Shadows) and Dan Halsted.
Our Flag Means Death is the latest TV foray for the in-demand Waititi. The writer, producer and director is also behind FX favorite What We Do in the Shadows, two animated event series based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for Netflix and Hollywood satire The Auteur for Showtime.
For HBO Max, Our Flag Means Death joins a roster of scripted originals including TBS import Search Party, TNT transfer Raised by Wolves, anthology Love Life, DC drama Doom Patrol, and the upcoming Tokyo Vice, Gossip Girl redo and The Flight Attendant, among others.
