Getty ImagesKARLOVY VARY – Japanese director Takashi Miike’s Shield of Straw (Wara No Tate) is to open the Fantasia International Film Festival on July 18.
Miike’s high school musical spoof movie For Love’s Sake opened the 2012 edition of the Canadian genre film festival.
The Japanese director’s latest film, a crime thriller about an elite police unit with 48 hours to transport a psychopath across Japan, bowed in competition in Cannes and will receive a North American premiere in Montreal.

Fantasia has also booked world premieres for Joe Swanberg’s 24 Exposures, which stars Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, Robert Morin‘s Les 4 Soldats (The Four Soldiers), and Discopathe, comic Renaud Gauthier‘s feature directorial debut.
There’s also world bows for Darren Paul Fisher’s OXV: The Manual, a U.K.-Australia co-production, and Canadian director Cody Callahan’s Antisocial, about five university friends engulfed by a zombie-like attack on New Year’s Eve.
Montreal will also host informal talks with X-Men’s Bryan Singer and U.K. film composer Simon Boswell.
The Fantasia International Film Festival is set to run from July 18 to Aug. 6.
