The debut of The Mandalorian‘s second season on Disney+ pushed the show into Nielsen’s streaming top 10 for the week of Oct. 26. The Queen’s Gambit, meanwhile, jumped up to the No. 1 spot for Netflix.
The Star Wars series placed third for the week in the Nielsen metric, which says viewers watched 1.03 billion minutes of the show (including its first season) during the week. The second season premiered Oct. 30, and episodes are being released weekly.
The Mandalorian is just the second Disney+ series to make the top 10 since the ratings service started releasing weekly rankings in August. The streamer’s premium VOD offering of Mulan ranked 10th in early September for its opening week.
The Queen’s Gambit jumped from 10th to first place, more than tripling its total viewing time — from 551 million to 1.85 billion minutes — in its first full week of release (it premiered Oct. 23). Netflix says that by its own measurement, the show is its biggest scripted limited series ever, and the Nielsen figures back that assertion up.
Aside from The Mandalorian, the only new entry in the top 10 is Netflix’s movie Holidate, starring Emma Roberts, in fifth place. The previous week’s No. 1, Schitt’s Creek, slipped three spots to fourth. Amazon’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm dropped out of the top 10 after ranking eighth a week earlier. Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries also fell out of the top 10 a week after debuting at No. 4.
Streaming platforms contend Nielsen’s methodology doesn’t capture the full scope of viewing on devices other than TV sets. Nielsen also only measures U.S. audiences, not those in other countries.
