The Queen’s Gambit ranked first in Nielsen’s streaming top 10 for the second straight week, but the presidential election may have pushed the overall time viewers spent on streaming down some in the week of Nov. 2.
The top 10 streaming shows for the week accounted for 7.45 billion minutes of viewing time. That’s the second-lowest total for the top 10 in the three months that Nielsen has been releasing weekly data (ahead of only the week of Oct. 19). The top 10 accounted for 11 percent fewer minutes of streaming time than the prior week; ratings for election coverage, meanwhile, gave a big boost to news programming that week.
Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit — which the streamer says is its biggest scripted limited series ever — accounted for 1.46 billion minutes of viewers’ time to rank first for the week. The Mandalorian (955 million minutes) stayed put at No. 3 in the week its second episode of season two debuted, and dropped only 7.5 percent from its premiere week.
The only other streaming original show in the top 10 for Nov. 2-8 is The Great British Baking Show, which ranks sixth.
Streaming platforms contend Nielsen’s methodology doesn’t capture the full scope of viewing on devices other than TV sets. Nielsen also only measures U.S. audiences, not those in other countries.
