Apple’s murder-mystery comedy from Phil Lord and Chris Miller has lined up its principal cast.
Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip, The Last O.G.) will lead the ensemble in The Afterparty, an eight-episode series set at a high school reunion afterparty. The cast also includes Sam Richardson (Veep), Zoë Chao (Love Life), Ben Schwartz (House of Lies), Ike Barinholtz (The Mindy Project), Ilana Glazer (Broad City), Dave Franco (The Disaster Artist), Jamie Demetriou (Miracle Workers) and John Early (Search Party).
Each episode of The Afterparty will retell the story of the night from a different character’s perspective, with the visual format and genre of storytelling changing each time to match the character’s personality. Apple gave the show, from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers Lord and Miller, TriStar TV and Sony Pictures Television, a straight-to-series order back in June.
Haddish will play Detective Danner, an eccentric cop assigned to solve the high-profile case. The Emmy winner is coming off TBS’ The Last O.G., which she exited after its third season. Her other recent credits include Like a Boss, Netflix’s Self Made and ABC’s Kids Say the Darndest Things.
Richardson will play Aniq, an escape room designer hoping to connect with his high school crush, Zoe (Chao), an artist turned school administrator who’s recently separated from her high school sweetheart — the arrogant ex-jock Brett (Barinholtz).
Schwartz plays Yasper, Aniq’s relentlessly positive best friend who dreams of a music career. Glazer plays former class president and valedictorian Chelsea. Franco will play Xavier, a drama nerd turned pop star and actor. Demetriou will play Walt, who was ignored in high school but hopes to make an impression at the reunion. Early will play Detective Culp, Danner’s overly eager partner.
Haddish is repped by UTA and Ziffren Brittenham; Richardson by UTA and Artists First; Chao by CAA, Carrie Byalick at B. Company and attorney James Adams of Schreck Rose; Schwartz by WME, Haven Entertainment and Gang Tyre; Barinholtz by UTA, Artists First and Jared Levine; Glazer by Range Media Partners and Jackoway Austen; Demetriou by CAA, United Agents in the U.K., Dianne McGunigle at MGMT and Emily Hargreaves at Multitude Media; Franco by WME, Anonymous Content, Relevant and Felker Toczek; and Early by UTA, Rise Management and Michael Auerbach.
