Based on the YouTube series of the same name, the comedy originally was set up at HBO in 2015 as a pilot, with Comedy Central swooping in after the premium cabler passed.
Comedy Central president Kent Alterman announced Friday at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour that the Viacom-owned network has handed out an eight-episode order to Gorburger and also has renewed Derek Waters’ Drunk History for a fifth season. Gorburger, described as an alternative late-night show, will launch in the spring. A time slot and formal premiere date have yet to be determined; it’s unclear if Gorburger will help fill the void at 11:30 p.m. created by the cancellation of Larry Wilmore’s show. Chris Hardwick’s topical game show @midnight has been filling the slot until a replacement can be named.

The Gorburger Show is described as a talk show hosted by a giant blue space monster (voiced by Silicon Valley star Miller, who also executive produces), who has invaded a Japanese morning talk show and held its staff hostage as he attempts to understand what it means to be human by interviewing celebrities, musicians and cultural icons. Ryan K. McNeal and Josh Martin created the series and also write, direct and executive produce alongside Sean Boyle for Funny or Die, with Caviar also on board. The series previously ran for two seasons and 19 episodes on Funny or Die. Ian Friedman, Rachel Olson and Kellyn Parker will oversee for Comedy Central. Watch a clip below.
“In these times? Damn, we need a blue-ass monster alien to talk about what the heck is going on with humanity. And what is the difference between a hog and a chicken?” said Miller. Added Alterman: “Through his monster alter ego, Gorburger, T.J. Miller will ask the big questions. Then he will confuse us with clarity.”
Meanwhile, the renewal for Drunk History takes the boozy unscripted comedy into its fifth season, which will return with 14 new episodes in 2017. “So excited and grateful to do a fifth season,” said creator and host Waters. “Oh, what a ride it’s been! Thank you for driving me home.”
