Catie LaffoonTNT’s drama Civil is adding another familiar face.
Eliza Coupe is set to guest star in the pilot, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Civil takes place in the wake of a hotly contested Presidential election, as America finds itself plunging uncontrollably into a modern-day Civil War. The series weaves together the personal stories of citizens from all walks of life, whose actions — amplified in an age of instant media — add fuel to the conflict and affect the fate of the entire country.
Coupe will play Kelly Brookmyre, a cable news correspondent attached to the Republican Presidential campaign. Her ambition — and her willingness to bend a few rules — ends up nudging her across the line from covering news to making it, with a profound effect on the course of the nation.
The actress joins previously cast Bradley Whitford, Courtney B. Vance, Toby Jones, Brian d’Arcy James and Enrique Murciano.
Since her breakthrough turn on Happy Endings, Coupe has kept busy on the small screen. She was most recently seen on Quantico, and currently recurs on The Mindy Project, Casual and the new TBS comedy Wrecked.
She will next star in another Hulu project, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Futureman, opposite Josh Hutcherson. She is repped by UTA, Kirsten Ames Management and Jackoway Tyerman.
Civil hails from writer and executive producer Scott Smith (A Simple Plan), who will exec-produce with Lloyd Braun and Thomas Kelly (Copper), who will also serve as showrunner. Allen Coulter (Nurse Jackie, Ray Donovan) is on board to direct the project, which will be produced by TNT Originals in association with MGM Television and Whalerock.
Civil is part of TNT’s push into edgier fare brought on by new TNT and TBS head Kevin Reilly. That push began with the recent premiere of Animal Kingdom, starring Ellen Barkin, as well as upcoming series Good Behavior starring Michelle Dockery, Cary Fukunaga’s The Alienist, Will and a reimagining of Tales From the Crypt from M. Night Shyamalan.
