In the network’s newly released first look at the eight-episode series, Hardy, who stars as James Keziah Delaney, surprises everyone who thought he was dead by appearing at his father’s funeral. The mysterious man returns to 1814 London after 10 years in Africa to discover that he has been left a legacy by his father.
He eventually finds himself in a face-off against the East India Company, while playing a dangerous game between two warring nations — Britain and America. In the clip, he’s seen taunting the trading company. ”Oh, the Leviathan of the sea. The beast with a million eyes and a million ears. Conquest, rape and plunder — and I do know the evil that you do because I was once a part of it,” he says, later adding: “I am a very dangerous man to know.”
Other castmembers include House of Cards’ Michael Kelly, who plays American doctor Dumbarton, and Pirates of the Caribbean’ Jonathan Pryce as Sir Stuart Strange, the head of the East India Company and Delaney’s nemesis.
From Hardy, his father, Chips Hardy, and Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, Locke), the drama is directed by Kristoffer Nyholm (Danish TV series The Killing). Ridley Scott’s Scott Free London and Hardy’s Hardy Son & Baker are producing for BBC One and FX, with Sonar Entertainment distributing worldwide outside the U.K. Scott and Kate Crowe are exec producers for Scott Free, alongside Hardy, Dean Baker and Knight. Timothy Bricknell (The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency) is producing.
