Tom Hiddleston will star opposite Claire Danes in Apple’s drama series The Essex Serpent.
The Emmy-nominated actor (The Night Manager) and Marvel Cinematic Universe star will play Will Ransome, a trusted leader in a small English community, in the adaptation of Sarah Perry’s award-winning novel (Apple also released a first photo of Hiddleston in the series, above). It’s the latest TV project for Hiddleston, who will next be seen in Marvel’s Loki on Disney+.
The Essex Serpent, from See-Saw Films (Top of the Lake, The King’s Speech), centers on Cora (Danes), a recently widowed woman who, having been released from an abusive marriage, relocates from Victorian London to the small village of Aldwinter in Essex. There she becomes intrigued by a local superstition that a mythical creature known as the Essex Serpent has returned to the area.
Anna Symon (Mrs. Wilson) is adapting Perry’s book and will serve as lead writer on the project, and Clio Barnard (The Selfish Giant, Dark River) will direct. Both are executive producing alongside Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Patrick Walters, Iain Canning and Emile Sherman. Andrea Cornwell produces.
In addition to his Marvel career, which spans six MCU films and the forthcoming Loki, Hiddleston’s credits include Kong: Skull Island, Muppets Most Wanted and War Horse. He’s repped by WME and by Hamilton Hodell in the U.K.
