National Geographic has cast the two leads for season two of its anthology series The Hot Zone.
Tony Goldwyn and Daniel Dae Kim will star in The Hot Zone: Anthrax, which chronicles the 2001 anthrax attacks. In the weeks after 9/11, major media outlets and two U.S. senators, Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy, were mailed envelopes containing spores of the deadly bacteria. Five people died and 17 others were hospitalized as a result of the attacks.
Like its predecessor, which followed scientists’ efforts to stop an Ebola outbreak, The Hot Zone: Anthrax will focus on the efforts to contain the spread of anthrax and show how a team of scientists, FBI agents and government departments slowly closed in on a prime suspect.
Goldwyn (Scandal, Lovecraft Country) will play Bruce Ivins, a microbiologist who becomes embroiled in the hunt to find the anthrax killer. While he initially works closely with the FBI, Ivins’ growing instability and paranoia give way to deeper, more disturbing revelations.
Kim (Lost, New Amsterdam) plays Matthew Ryker, an FBI agent with a specialty in microbiology. Just three weeks after 9/11, he risks his career in an attempt to convince his bosses that the country is facing a different form of attack.
“Tony and Daniel are both wonderfully versatile and dimensional actors who will bring complexity and depth to these characters,” said Carolyn Bernstein, executive vp scripted and documentary films at National Geographic. “We can’t wait for their star turns in this startling, authentic and timely scientific thriller.”
Added showrunners Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson, “Tony Goldwyn and Daniel Dae Kim have such tremendous depth as actors and are the perfect duo to dive into the twists and turns of the deadly attacks that sent the country into panic.”
The Hot Zone: Anthrax is scheduled to being filming in Toronto in the first quarter of 2021. The series comes from 20th Television and Scott Free Productions. Souders and Peterson, who also ran the series’ first season, executive produce along with Ridley Scott and David W. Zucker of Scott Free, Jordan Sheehan and Lynda Obst. Richard Preston, whose book was the basis for the first season, is a co-EP.
Goldwyn is repped by CAA, Untitled and Schreck Rose. Kim is repped by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, UTA and Gang Tyre.
