Welcome to This Week in TV. In a bid to help you prioritize among all the events, premieres, big episodes and finales, The Hollywood Reporter‘s eagle-eyed TV team every Monday will take a closer look at what to expect from the week ahead — and provide helpful links and context for each. Here’s a handy primer for the events that will likely take over the headlines in the week ahead.
Gotham Enlists a Famous DC Villain for Season Finale, Monday, 8 p.m.
The Fox drama is already chock-full of legendary comic book bad guys like Penquin and Riddler, but one more famous figure is about to enter the fray. Fresh out of the Suicide Squad spotlight, villainess Harley Quinn will make her debut in Monday’s two-hour season-three finale, as recently confirmed by star David Mazouz. But it remains to be seen just who will don those iconic, and colorful, pigtails.
ATX Festival Returns to Texas, Thursday to Sunday
The annual TV fest returns to Austin, Texas, for the sixth time. Once again, the lineup is an eclectic mix of nostalgic reunions (Battlestar Galactic, the Alias writers room, Northern Exposure), current hits (This Is Us, Fear the Walking Dead) and the next must-see series (Netflix’s GLOW, FX’s Snowfall). Check back to Live Feed throughout the festival for extensive coverage.
Orange Is the New Black Strikes Back in Season 5, Friday, midnight
It’s definitely not business as usual when the ladies of Litchfield return for season five. As hinted in the one-minute sneak peek released by Netflix in April, the season opens with a prison riot following the death of one of their own. “The collective stakes for the first time are heightened,” star Taylor Schilling told THR last month of the 13 upcoming episodes, which will all take place over just three days. Look for extensive Live Feed coverage from THR‘s Jackie Strause.
The Beginning of the End for Orphan Black, Saturday, 10 p.m.
Emmy winner Tatiana Maslaney reprises her many alter egos for the fifth and final season of the BBC American breakout. Following the fourth-season finale in which “everybody is hanging in the balance,” as co-creator and co-showrunner Graeme Manson told THR last year, look for Sarah to take “immediate action” in the final 10-episode run. That means the ultimate battle between Sarah and Rachel, as well as a deep dive into the mysterious P.T. Westmoreland character.
Niecy Nash Gets Her Claws Into TNT, Sunday, 9 p.m.
TNT’s drama slate has recently undergone a major creative overhaul with the departures of procedurals like Rizzoli & Isles in favor of serialized, character-driven dramas like Animal Kingdom. The next step in that reinvention is the dramedy Claws, which was originally developed at HBO. From exec producer Rashida Jones, the series about manicurists entrenched in the world of organized crime is headlined by Niecy Nash, fresh off acclaimed turns in Getting On and Scream Queens.
