After the controversial meeting between President Donald and Russian president Vladimir Putin on Monday in Helsinki received backlash from the public, Trevor Noah sounded off on the criticized event, ridiculing Trump for being a “cheerleader” to Putin.
During his monologue, the Daily Show host was quick to mock Trump’s statement that he didn’t see any reason why Russia would be involved with any collusion.
“Really? You don’t see any reason not to trust Vladmir Putin?” Noah asked. “The man was a top KGB spy. He’ll steal the shirt off your back. Hell, he stole the shirt off his own back. You can’t trust this man.”
The late-night host also quipped that on a list of untrustworthy people, Putin lies between “WebMD and the mom from Get Out.” “Now I see why Sherlock Holmes fired Trump as his assistant,” Noah said.
In shock over Trump’s defensive nature regarding Putin, Noah explained that Trump “believes Vladimir Putin over his own national security team” and “blamed both countries for the breakdown in their relationship.” “Sure, on the one hand Russia messed with the U.S. by meddling in the elections but on the other hand, America held elections. So they were asking for it. Yeah, makes sense,” Noah jeered.
Also adding, “It’s pretty wild for the President of the United States to defend Russia against the United States. It’s like seeing your team’s cheerleader pumping up the other side. It’s like, ‘Go team!’ But also their team. Both teams, but mostly their team.”
“I mean, come on Trump! Be aggressive. B-E aggressive,” Noah urged.
Noah then showed a clip where Trump praised Putin’s offer to have people working on the collusion case work with Russia investigators, referring to it as an “incredible” offer.
“Are you shitting me? So Putin offered to help investigate his own crime? And president out of the deal says, ‘What an incredible offer?” Noah asked. “Either Putin has something on Trump…or Trump is just an idiot who got played…. This is what you get when you put a KGB agent against a KFC agent.”
The late-night host was not the only one to criticize Trump’s performance during the summit. CNN’s Anderson Cooper called the meeting, “perhaps one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president at a summit in front of a Russian leader truly that I’ve ever seen.”
Chief national correspondent John King shared similar sentiments where he stated that he has “never seen an American president simply surrender to the leader of Russia.” King also advised that everyone “should call this ‘The Surrender Summit.'” Fellow late-night host Stephen Colbert also blasted the summit, referring to Trump’s meeting with Putin as “treason.”
Seth Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel also weighed in on the event.
