NBC’s comedy Trial & Error began its second season Thursday with some of its lowest adults 18-49 ratings on record — a not-unexpected result since it moved to summer from an in-season berth in 2017.
The second season, subtitled Lady, Killer and featuring new murder suspect Kristin Chenoweth, earned a 0.6 rating for its premiere and followed up with a 0.5 at 9:30 p.m. The second episode is a series low, but the hour is pretty well in line with the 0.6 average for Marlon earlier in the summer.
In 2017, Trial & Error averaged a 0.9 in the demo, but it did so with first This Is Us and then The Voice as a lead-in during the regular TV season. Thursday, it had a repeat of Ellen’s Game of Games (0.7) as its lead-in.
Big Brother kept its hold on the night’s No. 1 rating with a 1.5 on CBS, steady with last week’s eviction episode. The Four reached a season high with a 0.9 on Fox.
A move to 8 p.m. didn’t help ABC’s Take Two, which slipped a tenth of a point to 0.4. The Gong Show moved back to 10 o’clock and scored a 0.5, steady with last week; Match Game also held at 0.6.
In late night, The Late Show‘s 0.5 18-49 rating in metered markets beat out Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Tonight Show, both of which came in at 0.4 at 11:35 p.m. Late Night and Nightline tied at 0.3 at 12:35 a.m.; The Late Late Show (0.2) was a repeat.
