HBO has released the first footage of the highly anticipated third season of Nic Pizzolatto’s anthology True Detective.
The footage, released Sunday before the Sharp Objects finale, sets the stage for the Mahershala Ali-starring run of the show.
Season three of True Detective is set in Southern Missouri and tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods. Ali (Moonlight) toplines the new season as Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.
Carmen Ejogo (Selma) co-stars as Amelia Reardon, an Arkansas schoolteacher with a connection to two missing children in 1980. Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy and Mamie Gummer co-star.
As HBO reveals at the end of the footage, True Detective is set to premiere in January. A specific date has not been announced.
