The first Thursday of the year brought good news for CBS. One of the three nets to pack the evening with original programming, its entire lineup was improved from its last outing.
The Big Bang Theory averaged a 5.3 rating among adults 18-49, easily outperforming the rest of Thursday broadcast TV and up two-tenths from its previous episode. The Millers (2.9 adults) was up three-tenths, while The Crazy Ones (2.0 adults) was up a tenth. Two and a Half Men (2.1 adults) improved two-tenths, while Elementary (1.8 adults) was up a tenth to win the 10 p.m. drama race. CBS took a 2.7 rating with adults 18-49 and 10.9 million viewers for the night.
ABC launched its new Thursday with a two-hour return for The Taste (1.2 adults). The cooking competition was down nearly a full point from its more auspicious launch (2.1 adults) in 2012. Drama Assets made a quiet and dismal entry to the schedule at 10 p.m., averaging a mere 0.7 rating with adults 18-49. If that holds, it marks the lowest-rated Big Four drama premiere ever. ABC averaged a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49 and 4.4 million viewers.
Community might not have lived up to last season’s 1.9-rated premiere, but it still easily topped the rest of NBC’s comedy block. The first episode averaged a 1.3 rating among adults 18-49, with the second falling to a 1.2 rating. Sean Saves the World and The Michael J. Fox Show both earned a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49 — respective drops of two- and one-tenth of a point. Parenthood (1.3 adults) was improved by a tenth of a point to give the network a nightly 1.1 adults rating and 3.3 million viewers.
Both Fox and The CW aired encores. Fox took a 0.7 rating with adults 18-49 and 2.5 million viewers, while The CW averaged a 0.2 in the demo and 815,000 viewers.
