ABC’s Agents of SHIELD has earned the unfortunate bragging rights to the biggest drop-off from its premiere of any new show this season. Last week’s big scripted launch, which bested a four-year ratings record for a drama premiere, fell a significant 33 percent on Tuesday night.
Fast National returns have the latest SHIELD averaging a 3.1 rating among adults 18-49 and 8.4 million viewers. In the demo, that’s a steep drop from last week’s 4.7 rating. The rest of the new lineup dropped accordingly, with The Goldbergs (2.2 adults, down 29 percent), Trophy Wife (1.4 adults, down 39 percent) and Lucky 7 (0.8 adults, down 38 percent) all falling well below their premieres.
The series also lost the common hour to CBS’ relatively steady NCIS. The episode, the last featuring star Cote de Pablo, averaged a 3.4 rating in the key demo — down just two-tenths of a point from last week.
Bragging rights for the hour, of course, went to The Voice. NBC’s two-hour episode topped all of broadcast TV with a 4.4 rating in the demo, a loss of just three-tenths of a point from last week’s Tuesday opener. The smaller lead-in did not hurt Chicago Fire (2.8 adults). The series was up a tenth of a point from last week for a potential high, if adjustments don’t take it down a notch like last week. NBC averaged a 3.8 rating with adults 18-49 and 12.5 million viewers for the night.
The rest of CBS’ Tuesday lineup saw modest postpremiere dips as well, with NCIS: L.A. (2.7 adults) and Person of Interest (2.0 adults) both down three-tenths of a point. The latter, a new occupant in the 10 p.m. time slot, was at a series low. CBS averaged a 2.7 rating with adults 18-49 and 15.4 million viewers — pushing ABC (1.9 adults, 5.5 million viewers) back into third place in the demo.
On Fox, the comedy block saw smaller dips in its third week of the season. Freshmen Dads (1.3 adults) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.4 adults) dropped a respective two- and four-tenths of a point. New Girl (1.9 adults) also shed two-tenths, while The Mindy Project (1.5 adults) held steady and bested the 8 p.m. offerings for the first time this season. Fox averaged a 1.5 rating with adults 18-49 and 3.4 million viewers for the night.
Another night of The CW’s iHeartradio Music Festival averaged a 0.4 adults 18-49 rating, up one-tenth from last night, and 1.1 million viewers.
