Repeats ruled the roost on Thursday evening, but CBS still managed to outdo its broadcast competitors by a healthy margin.
On the strength of a repeat of The Big Bang Theory (10.2 million total viewers, 2.8 rating in adults 18-49 demographic), the night’s most-watched and highest-rated program, the network easily trumped its nearest competitor Fox by nearly 1 demo point (2.0 vs. 1.1) in primetime. Encores of Rules of Engagement (7.8 million, 2.2), Person of Interest (8.4 million, 1.7) and The Mentalist (8.9 million, 1.7) all won their respective time slots.
Fox came in second on the night with back-to-back Bones repeats (4.9 million, 1.0; 4.8 million, 1.1), which grew just slightly in the 9 p.m. hour.
ABC, third with a 0.9 demo average, aired the special Happy New Year, Charlie Brown (4.2 million, 1.1) at 8 p.m., the only true holiday offering as 2012 approaches. The special scored a distant second place following CBS’ comedy reruns in the hour, narrowly beating Bones. Back-to-back Grey’s Anatomy (2.8 million, 0.7; 3.2 million, 1.0) followed.
NBC placed fourth with reruns of its comedy block: Community (2.1 million, 0.7), Parks and Recreation (2 million, 0.7), The Office (2.8 million, 1.0) and Whitney (2.1 million, 0.8). At 10 p.m., another repeat of The Office (1.9 million, 0.8) aired, followed by Up All Night (1.9 million, 0.7).
The CW aired encores of The Vampire Diaries (967,000, 0.3) and The Secret Circle (834,000, 0.3).
If Univision is in the mix, the network’s Una Familia con Suerte (3.8 million, 1.5; 3.9 million, 1.6) trailed CBS in the 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. hours. At 10 p.m., La Rosa de Guadalupe (3.2 million, 1.0) narrowly beat ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy repeat, which placed second in the hour. In primetime, the network averaged a 1.4 rating, which would put it ahead of Fox for second.
