The battle for No. 1 is heated this season, with Fox’s Empire and CBS’ veteran comedy The Big Bang Theory neck and neck in the key demo.
Wednesday’s Empire saw live-plus-same-day ratings finally hold, evening out at a 3.4 rating among adults 18-49 and 9.3 million viewers. This comes just two days after The Big Bang Theory locked the same demo score for its Monday episode, leaving the two series tied for the week.
With live-plus-seven-day time-shifting, Empire still ranked No. 1 among all non-sports programs during premiere week, but the two series have since been more evenly matched. Last week, Empire‘s live-plus-three-day showing in the key demo came in at a 4.7 rating. That was two-tenths of a point shy of The Big Bang Theory, which it virtually tied in its night-of showing.
Elsewhere on Fox, Lethal Weapon was up to a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49, improving by two-tenths of a point in the key demo after its full-season pickup.
CBS saw improved outings of Survivor (2.0 adults), Criminal Minds (1.7 adults) and Code Black (1.1 adults) on Wednesday.
On ABC, The Goldbergs, Speechless and Black-ish each averaged a 1.8 rating among adults 18-49, marking a notable improvement for Black-ish. Modern Family, which was shy of only Empire for the night with its 2.4 rating among adults 18-49, was also up. Designated Survivor held with a 1.6 rating in the key demo.
Blindspot fell two-tenths of a point to a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49 on NBC, preceding unmoved episodes of Law & Order: SVU and Chicago P.D. — both of which logged a 1.4 rating in the key demo.
On The CW, freshman Frequency was down to a 0.3 rating among adults 18-49 — like No Tomorrow the night before. That was after an even Arrow averaged a 0.7 rating in the key demo.
