Flowers in the Attic bloomed nicely for Lifetime. The cable net’s adaptation of V.C. Andrews‘ controversial best-seller debuted to 6.1 million viewers on Saturday night.
The haul marks a basic cable best since the network’s remake of Steel Magnolias in October 2012. And among adults 25-54, it was the highest rated ad-supported telepic since November 2012 with an average 2.6 million viewers in the demo. (Among total viewers, Disney Channel’s Teen Beach Movie holds the TV movie record with 8.4 million.)
Those numbers give quite a vote of confidence to Lifetime’s current development plans for a follow-up. Network EV and GM Rob Sharenow told reporters just a week ago that Lifetime is already at work on book sequel Petals on the Wind. Flowers screenwriter Kayla Alpert is already working on the script, noting that the story takes place about 10 years after the events of first. “It is a very, juicy compelling revenge drama,” added Alpert.
Among Lifetime’s targeted women 25-54, Flowers averaged 2.0 million viewers. With 18-49-year-olds, Flowers took 2.4 million adults — 1.9 million of them women.
Lifetime already has plans to encore the film after the debut of Jan. 25 marquee movie, Lizzie Borden Took An Ax.
