The people have spoken.
Though time-shifting will paint a much brighter picture, one that FX brass are waiting to tout, premiere night ratings for miniseries The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story are pretty damn good. Per Nielsen’s live-plus-same day returns, the one-hour and twenty-minute premiere averaged 5.1 million viewers and a 2.0 rating among adults 18-49.
Compared to recent FX premieres, O.J. is bigger than anything outside of the American Horror Story franchise. Previous records belong to the most recent two installments of fellow Ryan Murphy efforts American Horror Story: Freak Show and American Horror Story: Hotel. Those openers averaged a respective 10 and 9.1 million viewers after live-plus-three day ratings and skewed younger, though each had only slightly larger live-plus-same day showings than O.J. among total viewers.
O.J., a perfect storm of what’s hot in TV right now (true crime and Kardashians packaged in a Murphy anthology), stands to grow considerably in time-shifting — so consider this story developing.
