Game of Thrones remained in enviable shape for the second episode of its fourth season. A week after premiering to a record-breaking 6.6 million viewers, the HBO drama notched its second-biggest episode to date with 6.3 million viewers.
Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones, which dispatched one of the series’ central characters, was off just 2 percent from the premiere by the end of the night. It took in 8 million viewers with a 11 p.m. encore. Compared to the second episode last season, the show was up a massive 48 percent.
News of Game of Thrones continued dominance comes with some less-than-stellar cable news for Mad Men. The premiere of the AMC series’ seventh and final season took a big hit in its return, averaging just 2.3 million viewers. Head-to-head with Mad Men, the second episode of HBO’s Silicon Valley averaged 1.7 million viewers.
The stamina bodes well for Game of Thrones‘ gross viewership. Last season saw the show jump to a weekly average of 14.4 million viewers across platforms, making it the pay cable network’s biggest series on the air.
Last week’s season premiere marked HBO’s most-watched telecast since the 2007 Sopranos series finale.
