Final returns for the Golden Globes give NBC a ten-year high of 20.9 million viewers. The show was also up a touch among adults 18-49, averaging a 6.5 rating in the key demo to tie a ten-year high. The show’s increases mark improvements of 6 percent and 2 percent, respectively, from last year’s show.
One factor in NBC reupping hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for a two-year hosting deal was the 2013 ratings spike that coincided with their debut. Last year’s Golden Globes brought 19.7 million viewers and a 6.4 rating among adults 18-49 in final returns. Both marked double-digit year-to-year gains for the highest-rated Globes telecast in six years.
NBC’s red carpet coverage was up 12 percent from the previous year, averaging a 2.8 rating among adults 18-49.
Among the night’s competitors, CBS fared even better than NBC thanks to overrun from a massive NFL playoff game. More than an hour of gameplay averaged a 11.3 rating among adults 18-49. 60 Minutes (4.2 adults), which includes inflation from the game, led into new episodes of The Good Wife (1.8 adults) and The Mentalist (1.7 adults) — up four and one-tenth, respectively. CBS averaged a 4.8 rating among adults 18-49 and 18.1 million viewers for the night.
Without a football boost this week, Fox’s animation lineup saw drops. The Simpsons (2.2 adults) plummeted 2.4 points. Bob’s Burgers (1.9 adults) was off by a point, while Family Guy (2.6 adults) fell half of a point and American Dad (2.2 adults) dropped two-tenths. The network averaged a 1.8 rating among adults 18-49 and 3.8 million viewers.
America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.0 adults) dropped six-tenths of a point on ABC. Special The Bachelor: Behind the Scenes (0.9 adults) was down nearly a point from last week’s Bachelor special, and Revenge (1.6 adults) dropped by just two-tenths of a point. Betrayal (0.8 adults) improved by a tenth of a point, giving ABC a nightly average of a 1.1 adults rating and 4.2 million viewers.
