March Madness scored its first primetime win this tournament, with NCAA basketball topping the night for CBS. Initial ratings are subject to more adjustment than usual, given the nature of live sports coverage, but the preliminary 2.5 rating among adults 18-49 marks a two-tenths improvement from last year’s comparable coverage.
ABC led the night’s scripted offerings. Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (0.9 adults), up a tenth from last week, led into a similarly boosted Grey’s Anatomy (2.5 adults). Scandal (3.1 adults) won the night, rising two-tenths of a point from last week. The network averaged a 2.2 rating in the key demo and 6.8 million viewers.
A steady Hell’s Kitchen (1.8 adults) led into the new half-hour American Idol results show (1.9 adults) — down a tenth of a point from last week. Surviving Jack opened to a very modest 1.3 rating with adults 18-49 at 9:30 p.m., giving Fox a 1.7 rating in the demo and 5.9 million viewers for the night.
Encores of Hollywood Game Night led into a boosted Parenthood (1.4 adults) on NBC, a tenth of a point improvement from last week. NBC took a 1.2 rating with adults under 50 and 4.3 million viewers.
The Vampire Diaries (0.7 adults) notched a series low, slipping four-tenths of a point from last week. Reign (0.6 adults) shed a tenth, and The CW took a 0.7 adults rating and 1.6 million viewers for the night.
