If you aren’t Steve Harvey, the midseason has probably been pretty rough on you. No spring premiere, save Harvey’s Little Big Shots, has done much in the way of ratings. And the latest stab from ABC isn’t an exception — despite the fact that it’s produced by network MVP Shonda Rhimes.
The Catch opened to a very modest same-day score of a 1.2 rating among adults 18-49 and 5.8 million viewers. That puts it below the most recent Thursday debut for a ABC, The Family — albeit that preview aired at 9 p.m. In terms of the 10 o’clock hour, The Catch comes in below the typical night of showing for Shondaland-produced How to Get Away With Murder and eight-tenths of a point even behind last year’s solid Thursday debut for American Crime.
It marked the end of a gradual descent for the TGIT block, which peaked with Grey’s Anatomy pulling a 2.0 rating among adults 18-49 and 7.9 million viewers. The Catch‘s lead-in, Scandal, was steady with a 1.6 rating in the key demo.
Competition was different than a typical Thursday, with CBS airing NCAA basketball. Time zone adjustments may ultimately give March Madness the demo crown for the night, but coverage is currently trailing Grey’s Anatomy.
Save a steady episode of American Idol (1.7 adults) on Fox and new You, Me and the Apocalypse (0.6 adults) and Shades of Blue (1.0 adults) on NBC, everything else on broadcast was a repeat.
