ABC’s commercial-free airing of Black Panther and a tribute to its late star, Chadwick Boseman, gave the network some of its best ratings of the summer on Sunday. The CW, meanwhile, looks to have given the Video Music Awards a bit of a boost.
Black Panther drew 6.09 million viewers and a 1.4 rating among adults 18-49 for ABC, easily the best Sunday numbers of the summer on the network. Following the movie, a half-hour tribute to Boseman, who died Friday of colon cancer at age 43, brought in 4.72 million viewers and a 1.1 in the 18-49 demographic.
The VMAs drew 759,000 viewers on The CW as part of a multi-network simulcast; Sunday was the first time the show has ever aired on a broadcast network. Last year’s awards averaged a little under 5 million viewers across multiple outlets and 1.93 million on MTV. Full ratings for the awards, which also aired on MTV and several other ViacomCBS cable channels, will be available later in the day.
Big Brother took a slight hit for CBS: Its 0.9 in adults 18-49 and 3.82 million viewers is down from 1.0 and 4.12 million a week ago. Love Island posted a modest 0.3 and 1.47 million viewers, and 60 Minutes (0.5, 6.1 million) was down some from its recent outings.
NBC aired an NHL playoff game, which earned preliminary numbers of 1.56 million viewers and a 0.5 in adults 18-49 — subject to change because of the live broadcast.
ABC’s 1.2 rating among adults 18-49 topped primetime on the broadcast networks, more than doubling its closest competitor. CBS and NBC tied for second at 0.5. Telemundo and Univision also tied, at 0.3, as did Fox and The CW, at 0.2.
