Several networks wasted no time in launching midseason series. Just three nights into 2016, ABC and Fox both aired original comedies against daunting competition from the final Sunday Night Football match-up and last game of the NFL season.
With solid overrun from the NFL as its lead-in, Fox’s debuts were modest, but given the typical showing from comedies on Sunday night, their first live-plus-same day scores could have been a lot worse. After a new Simpsons (2.0 rating among adults 18-49), Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life averaged a 1.2 rating in the key demo and 2.6 million viewers. And, after Family Guy (1.7 adults), cartoon Bordertown averaged a 1.1 rating with adults 18-49 and 2.4 million viewers.
Though neither series received as much promotion as last year’s comparable Sunday launch, The Last Man on Earth, they still didn’t manage half that show’s handsome 2.4-rated debut. Fox no longer chimes in on live-plus-same day scores and will release time-shifting and multiplatform stats as they become available.
ABC aired back-to-back new episodes of Galavant. The softly rated musical comedy averaged a 0.9 rating among adults 18-49 in both half-hours. That’s more than a 50 percent drop from its season debut. Galavant went on to rise an average 46 percent in time-shifting for a 1.9 rating in the key demo.
As for SNF, the Green Bay Packers-Minnesota Vikings game was both a huge improvement from the prior two weeks and from last year’s comparable tilt. The season-ender, averaging a 14.8 households rating, marked a 17 percent boost from last year. And while its demo score won’t be official until final time-zone adjusted ratings arrive, it will easily win Sunday.
CBS had new episodes of 60 Minutes (2.4 adults) and Undercover Boss (1.4 adults).
