The NFL’s conference championship games combined for a bigger audience than they did a year ago.
Fox and CBS both grew their audiences from a year ago, and the two games also recorded the largest digital audiences ever for the conference championships. The two broadcasts were the most watched programs in nearly a year — since Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2, 2020.
The NFC title game — a 31-26 win for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over the Green Bay Packers — averaged 44.77 million viewers for Fox in the afternoon slot on Sunday. That’s up about 5 percent vs. last year’s NFC championship, which aired in primetime, and was the most watched NFC championship since 2017.
CBS’ broadcast of the Kansas City Chiefs’ second straight AFC championship, a 38-24 win over the Buffalo Bills, drew 41.85 million viewers in primetime, up 2 percent from a year ago.
The two games also had an average digital audience of 1.5 million viewers (1.6 million for the NFC game and 1.4 million for the AFC), per the NFL. The average TV and digital audience for the two matchups was 44.3 million, a 3 percent bump over last year.
Following the AFC title game, CBS’ FBI drew its best numbers of the season with just under 9 million viewers and a 2.0 rating among adults 18-49. ABC aired originals opposite football, with Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Card Sharks predictably declining and The Rookie (0.4 in 18-49, 3.39 million viewers) holding fairly steady opposite FBI. TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé was the top show on cable in both adults 18-49 (0.66) and total viewers (2.45 million).
