A big audience for the deciding game of the National League Championship Series on Sunday saved the seven-game set from all-time ratings lows. NBC’s Sunday Night Football drew relatively soft numbers, and the premiere of ABC’s Supermarket Sweep pulled in a decent-sized audience.
The Los Angeles Dodgers’ 4-3 win over the Atlanta Braves drew 9.66 million viewers on Fox and FS1, the most for any league championship series game in three years. It also pushed the average audience for the series to 4.05 million, just above last year’s all-time NLCS low of 4 million.
The American League championship, however, did fall to historic lows, averaging just 2.78 million viewers on TBS. That’s down more than 50 percent both from last year (on Fox and FS1) and the last time the ALCS was on TBS in 2018.
The big audience for baseball likely helped drive down the audience for Sunday Night Football to one of its smallest audiences ever: 12.6 million viewers. While it was still Sunday’s most watched primetime show, it was down 15 percent from the same week of the NFL season in 2019.
Supermarket Sweep, hosted by Leslie Jones, scored a 1.0 rating among adults 18-49 and 4.9 million viewers, the best marks for any entertainment program on Sunday. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (0.6, 3.96 million) and Card Sharks (0.4, 2.71 million) also made their season debuts on ABC.
On Saturday, CBS drew the biggest college football audience of the season by far — 9.6 million viewers — for its broadcast of Alabama vs. Georgia. Saturday Night Live scored 6.59 million viewers and a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demo.
