Fox’s first Thursday Night Football telecast of the season put up solid ratings numbers, growing slightly over the same week a year ago.
The game between the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought in 14.71 million viewers (including its simulcast on NFL Network), up about 2 percent from the 14.41 million who watched the week five Thursday game in 2019. Fox also scored a 4.5 rating among adults 18-49, slightly above last season’s 4.3 average.
TNF was far and away the top show on Nielsen-measured TV Thursday, although some other programming held up reasonably well. ABC’s Celebrity Family Feud (0.7 in adults 18-49, 4.92 million viewers), Press Your Luck (0.5, 3.23 million) and Match Game (0.4, 2.53 million) each slipped a bit in the 18-49 demo but were reasonably steady in total viewers. CBS’ Big Brother (1.0, 3.99 million) was also on par with its season average.
The final episodes of Supernatural also got off to a good start on The CW: Its 0.4 in adults 18-49 and 1.13 million viewers were the best numbers for the show since early last season.
NBC’s comedy Connecting …, however, got off to a fairly soft start. The remotely filmed series managed just a 0.3 in adults 18-49 and 1.67 million viewers, while Seth Meyers’ Closer Look Thursday special came in at 0.2 and 1.43 million viewers.
On cable, news programming again topped the night by wide margins, with Fox News’ Hannity (4.96 million viewers) and Tucker Carlson Tonight (4.85 million) leading the way. TBS had 2.75 million viewers for its primetime Major League Baseball playoff game between the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays.
