Monday night did not work for Monday Mornings.
TNT’s latest drama, getting an atypical winter launch, opened to just 1.34 million viewers after its Dallas lead, a low for the network. The low-rated addition to the TNT’s generally strong scripted roster comes just a week after Dallas dropped in its sophomore return.
In the network’s coveted adults 25-54 demographic, Monday Mornings pulled 472,000 viewers.
As for Dallas, after last week’s 2.98 million opener (a 58 percent drop from last July’s debut), the series slipped another 25 percent to pull 2.23 million viewers. The score, sill considerably more robust than that of Monday Mornings, was off less than its second episode drop last season (31 percent). Dallas pulled 917,000 viewers in the adults 25-54 demographic.
From creators David E. Kelley and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Monday Mornings attempts to put a new spin on the hospital drama by focusing on its weekly morbidity and mortality meetings. It stars Alfred Molina, Ving Rhames, Bill Irwin, Jamie Bamber and Jennifer Finnigan.
In his review of the series, The Hollywood Reporter‘s chief TV critic Tim Goodman took issue with the format. “The centerpiece M&M meetings should be what sets the series apart,” he writes, “but those scenes are what is actually bogging the show down into nonsense.”
