This Week in TV Trailers: ‘American Gods,’ the ‘Leftovers’ Final Season and More

In the era of Peak TV, there’s more new television airing each week than ever before. To keep it all straight, The Hollywood Reporter will compile a roundup of the week’s biggest trailers for new and returning shows that should not be missed.

In this week’s roundup, a new trailer for American Gods, a look at the last season of The Leftovers and a preview for Fox’s Shots Fired, premiering Wednesday, March 22.

American Gods

The Starz series, adapted from the best-selling Neil Gaiman novel of the same name, stars Game of Thrones alum Ian McShane, along with The 100‘s Ricky Whittle. From Hannibal and Pushing Daisies mastermind Bryan Fuller and Logan scribe Michael Green, the series centers on a brewing war between old gods and new. The series premieres April 30.

The Leftovers

The end is nigh both onscreen and off in the trailer for the upcoming third and final season of the HBO drama. The footage for the final season, shot in Australia, hints at a higher purpose for Justin Theroux’s Kevin, namely a theory that he might be Jesus. The Leftovers returns April 16.

Big Little Lies

There are only three episodes left of the Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley-led limited series. In the third-to-last episode, Kidman’s Celeste ventures out to therapy sessions on her own as Perry (Alexander Skarsgard) becomes more abusive. And Dern’s Renata Klein hits a breaking point when she learns her daughter, Amabella, has been abused once again.

Veep

The first official trailer for the upcoming sixth season of the Emmy darling debuted at SXSW ahead of its April 16 debut. The new footage makes it clear that Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is having trouble coping with her post-presidency life. The clip also hints at a surprising new gig for Amy (Anna Chlumsky). Thankfully, Selina’s disdain for Jonah (Timothy Simons) remains.

Master of None

More than a year after its debut, the Emmy-winning series from Aziz Ansari finally has a season-two release date. The show will be back on Netflix May 12, but according to the teaser below, Dev and company may not be in New York City anymore.

Dave Chappelle 

The official trailer is out for the comic’s two new comedy specials, which hit Netflix March 21 and mark his first TV stand-up specials in 12 years. “I’ve been gone for a very long time,” jokes Chappelle. The comedian made headlines and earned praise from critics for his post-election appearance hosting Saturday Night Live.

Shots Fired

The Fox limited series centering on the investigations into two racially charged murder investigations debuts March 22. Created by Love & Basketball filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood, the series was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and the recent string of African-Americans killed by police. “We’ve had the desire since the George Zimmerman trial and being so rocked by that and seeing the reactions of our sons, who we couldn’t hug and tell them, ‘It’s going to be OK.’ ” Prince-Bythewood recently told THR.

Into the Badlands

The AMC martial-arts drama from Smallville alums Alfred Gough and Miles Millar comes back for its second season March 19. Expect more epic battles, and more bloodshed, when the series returns.

Becoming Bond

The Hulu original documentary is about none other than Bond, James Bond. The official trailer shows the doc looking at the fictional secret agent and the history of the character. The documentary is directed by Josh Greenbaum.

American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story

Although not fictional, Hugh Hefner may in fact be more infamous and legendary than James Bond. That’s why Amazon is bringing this 10-part docuseries to fans about the mind behind Playboy. The series includes over 17,000 hours of footage from Hefner’s personal archive.
