Upfronts week is over, but the battle among the broadcast networks’ new offerings has only just begun.
Much like the new 2015-16 broadcast schedules themselves, superheroes and other hot comic book properties are leading the pack so far in terms of social buzz. According to communications agency Way to Blue, which measured the total number of mentions about a show across Twitter, blogs, online forums and news items over a one-week period, CBS’ Supergirl ranks second among all new shows with more than 117,000 total mentions. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The CW spinoff of Arrow and The Flash, is third with just over 63,000.
Shows with built-in brand recognition like the revivals of The Muppets (39,072) and The X-Files (28,340), as well as the TV adaptations of hit films Minority Report (17,818) and Limitless (13,021) are also trending high.
However, top among the 39 new shows listed is Ryan Murphy‘s horror comedy Scream Queens with more than 122,000 social mentions. The Fox entry starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Emma Roberts was picked up straight to series in October and Fox has taken full advantage of its early head start. Special teaser clips for the series were released Feb. 13 and March 13, and have since notched 1 million and 2.6 million views, respectively. Additionally, the series already has more than 65,000 followers on Twitter and more than 42,000 YouTube channel subscribers.
On YouTube, Supergirl is by far the winner with 10.1 million views clocked since the trailer was released late Wednesday. The trailer for Legends of Tomorrow is a distant second with 4.2 million views. Promos for Lucifer (1.4 million), Minority Report (1.2 million) and The Muppets (881,000) are also leading the pack.
But it’s not all good news. So far, new comedies appear to be having the toughest time breaking through the heavy social media static. Fox’s The Guide to Surviving Life, ABC’s The Real O’Neals and The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend all have garnered less than 2,000 social mentions each. Despite its big-screen pedigree, the trailer for ABC’s Uncle Buck has the lowest number of YouTube views among all the new shows with just a little more than 32,000.
