Welcome to another episodes of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter‘s TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the week in TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunner and executive guests and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
This week’s five topics are:
1. NBCUniversal’s streaming plans revealed. Peacock — yes, that’s really the name of the service — will lean hard into its parent company’s IP with an impressive roster of film and TV library titles, spinoffs of some of their most beloved titles and a heavy emphasis on comedy (at least so far). This segment breaks down the strategy and what gives Peacock the jump on streaming competitors like Apple. The analysis begins at the 3:46 mark.

2. Primetime Emmy preview. THR‘s senior awards analyst and host of Awards Chatter Scott Feinberg returns to TV’s Top 5 to preview the potential winners, surprises and big moments from Fox’s telecast. Plus, could there be a Friends cast reunion as part of the host-less ceremony? The discussion begins at the 11:04 mark.
3. Saturday Night Live‘s black eye. Shane Gillis came and went in the span of four days after his racist and homophobic “comedy” remarks went viral. In this segment, Angry Dan returns for a rant that must not be missed. The segment begins at the 25:53 mark.
4. Showrunner Spotlight: Chuck Lorre. The prolific producer behind The Big Bang Theory opens up about his massive streaming library for the nerdy comedy starring Jim Parsons, his love of broadcast, why he avoids reboots and if his new show, CBS’ Bob Hearts Abishola, will get political. The interview begins at the 30:52 mark.
5. Critic’s Corner. As always, every episode ends with Fienberg offering his thoughts about what to watch (or skip). This week, Fienberg takes a speed-dating approach to the whopping 13 new broadcast shows launching in the week ahead. Tune in at the 1:03:45 mark.
Hear it all now on TV’s Top 5. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast to never miss an episode. (Reviews welcome!) You can also email Goldberg and Fienberg with any topics or questions you’d like to be addressed in future episodes at TVsTop5@THR.com.
