Welcome to episode 108 of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter‘s TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executive and other guests and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
This week’s five topics are:
1. Amazon goes all-in on Donald Glover.
The Atlanta star moved his overall deal from Disney’s FX to the retail giant/streamer and, per sources, is getting a content channel of his own on the platform. Plus he’s working with aspiring TV writer Malia Obama on a new series. Oh, and he’s collaborating with Fleabag favorite Phoebe Waller-Bridge to create and star in a Mr. and Mrs. Smith update for the streamer.
2. Are broadcast networks trimming the fat on expensive shows?
Following a wave of final-season announcements for veteran shows including NCIS: New Orleans, Mom, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Superstore and Last Man Standing, this segment explores one of the early trends to emerge as the broadcast networks plot out their 2021-22 schedules.
3. The Bachelor controversy.
Franchise host Chris Harrison derailed what was to have been a historic season of The Bachelor and has taken a leave from the franchise. Joining us this week to break down what’s going on in Bachelor Nation is THR East Coast managing editor and resident Bachelor expert Jackie Strause. Will the ABC franchise from Warner Bros. TV need to find a new host?
4. Showrunner Spotlight.
For All Mankind creator Ron Moore joins the show this week for a wide-ranging interview about season two of his Apple space drama, why he left Sony for an overall deal with Disney, the allure of revisiting Star Wars and how much more life is left in Outlander (a lot).
5. Critic’s Corner.
As usual, every episode ends with Dan’s guide to what to watch (or skip) in the week ahead. This week, he weighs in on HBO Max’s It’s a Sin, HBO’s Allen v. Farrow, The CW’s Superman & Lois and more.
Hear it all now on TV’s Top 5. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast to never miss an episode. (Reviews welcome!) You can also email us with any topics or Mailbag questions you’d like to be addressed in future episodes at TVsTop5@THR.com.
Coming next week: It’s a Sin creator Russell T. Davies joins the show for a Showrunner Spotlight segment.
