Welcome to episode 104 of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter‘s TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executive and other guests and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
This week’s five topics are:
1. The inauguration.
It was the only show in town this week.
2. The future of cable news networks.
How will cable news networks like CNN, MSNBC and Fox News adapt to the new administration in D.C.? Trump’s reality show presidency delivered ratings and financial gains across the board. This segment examines what happens next. Vulture West Coast editor Josef Adalian joins the show this week to look at the possibilities.
3. Netflix Q4 earnings.
The streaming giant continues to get bigger at a faster rate than industry watchdogs and Wall Street could have anticipated.
4. Showrunner Spotlight.
WandaVision head writer — that’s a Marvel term for “showrunner” — Jac Schaeffer joins the show this week for a discussion about how the comic book sitcom became, well, a comic book sitcom. The Black Widow scribe also opens up about its place in the film and TV Marvel universe, those creative in-show “commercials” and filming in front of a studio audience. “[WandaVision] was always designed to feel like a run of a comic book. In that way, [the season] feels very complete,” she says. While she declined comment (in typical Marvel fashion) about a potential second season, she notes the finale offers “an emotional completion.”
5. Critic’s Corner.
As usual, every episode ends with Dan’s guide to what to watch (or skip) in the week ahead. This week, he weighs in on Netflix’s apparent hit heist drama Lupin, Epix’s Bridge and Tunnel, HBO’s Painting With John and more.
Tune in next week when we’ll be joined by Showtime duo Desus and Mero.
