Welcome to another episode of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter‘s TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executive and other guests and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
This week’s five topics are:
1. NBC News in the middle of a firestorm.
NBC News found itself in the middle of a firestorm this week when it scheduled a Thursday town hall with President Trump for the same time as a similar event ABC had scheduled with Joe Biden. This segment explores NBC’s long and troubling relationship with Trump, how the network made a sizable donation to the Trump Foundation to prevent him from running in 2012 and how the backlash over the debate from its top talent.
2. The revolving executive doors.
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: there are more exec changes happening in the TV industry. This week, NBC’s alternative head Meredith Ahr was dismissed after an investigation into allegations she fostered a toxic work culture. Plus another top executive leaves Netflix. So what does this mean for the TV you actually watch?
3. Dexter returns and TV’s Top 5 has the exclusive details!
Showtime this week revived its serial killer drama Dexter for a limited series with original star Michael C. Hall and showrunner Clyde Phillips attached. In his first interview about the revival, Phillips joins the show this week for an interview about what to expect. Will Jennifer Carpenter return? Will the series return to its Miami setting? Will the revival undo the events of the maligned series finale? Will Phillips’ original vision for the end of the show play a role in what to expect from the revival? Here’s a teaser: “This isn’t Dexter season nine. … This was an opportunity to write a second finale for the show.”
4. Talent Spotlight.
This week, we’re changing up our usual Showrunner Spotlight segment and welcome actress, producer, director and activist America Ferrera to the show. The Ugly Betty alum opens up about how the pandemic changed her planned farewell to NBC’s Superstore, why she returned — and extended her stay (albeit briefly), what filming during a pandemic is like for an actor, how COVID-19 is written into the comedy and so much more.
5. Critic’s Corner.
As usual, every episode ends with Dan’s look at what to watch (or skip). This week, he weighs in on Hulu’s Helstrom, Netflix’s Grand Army and The West Wing reunion special on HBO Max.
