‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Creates a “Pizza Rat Boulevard” in New York City

Pizza Rat: first, the Internet; now, New York City?

After a video of a rat carrying a slice of pizza down the stairs of the subway station — as captured by Matt Little, a comedian and member of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre — became a social media phenomenon last month, a new street sign referencing the viral clip has been spotted in Brooklyn.

A “Pizza Rat Boulevard” sign stood on the corner of India Street and Franklin Street in Greenpoint, thanks to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, an employee of the corner’s 3 Roots Cafe told ABC News.

The Netflix series — created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, and starring Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess and Jane Krakowski — is currently shooting its second season and often films in the Brooklyn neighborhood. 

“They had notified us about it in advance,” the employee said. “It was only up for a few hours.”

The Emmy-nominated comedy stars Kemper as a woman who was rescued from a doomsday cult, who after 15 years spent in a bunker, chooses to start a new life in New York City. The first season found the intensely optimistic protagonist learning the modern ways of dating, job hunting and technology — a juggling act that somewhat resembles Pizza Rat’s own tenacious endeavor.

“It’s all a metaphor for living in New York,” Little told BuzzFeed News at the time. “You have too far to go and too much carry. But life gives you as much as you can handle.”
