Everyone wants to know: How close will Damon and Elena get?
The Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev, who does double duty as the crackling vamp Katherine and Elena on the hit CW series, hints that that may be too much to assume — at the moment, that is. After all, at the end of last season, her love, Stefan, ran away with Klaus.
Damon and Elena are together “out of circumstance,” Dobrev told The Hollywood Reporter at the CW fall premiere party on the Warner Bros. lot, “because Damon is helping Elena find Stefan so even though he wants her, he’s being selfless and he’s being the hero in the situation. He’s trying to make sure she’s happy and what makes her happy is Stefan.”

But with Stefan and Klaus wreaking havoc, how long will it be until Stefan is reunited again with Elena?
“I can’t tell you that,” Dobrev said with a laugh.

When Stefan does return to Mystic Falls, she shared that he will be a changed vampire — especially after sinking his fangs into the dark side. “They’ll still have that need and that want. It’ll take a while for them to recuperate.”
Flashbacks will continue to be a big part of the series, with an episode within the first six of the third season set in the 1920s, though Dobrev wouldn’t reveal if Katherine was a part of it, saying only that “it looks beautiful.” Whether or not Katherine will play a role in another flashback episode that has yet to be filmed, Dobrev had a twinkle in her eye.
With Jenna’s surprising death and Alaric reluctantly stepping into the father role, things are changing in every aspect of Elena’s life.
“She’s no longer letting the men in her life dictate what happens. She’s going to rise up and become a woman and fight,” Dobrev says.
The Vampire Diaries premieres its third season Thursday at 8 p.m. on the CW.
