[Warning: Spoilers from Thursday’s episode, “Down the Rabbit Hole.”]
The Vampire Diaries continued on its trek for the cure, only this time it introduced a new wrinkle. Was it truly surprising? Perhaps not, as it was a theory that was bandied about ever since the idea of a vampirism cure was revealed weeks ago. Someone also makes a very untimely return and another may be in limbo, but more on that later.
Let’s get back to the cure: The “twist” came early on in Thursday’s episode, “Down the Rabbit Hole,” with new guy Vaughn (Charlie Bewley) confirming that the cure Elena (Nina Dobrev), Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Stefan (Paul Wesley), Shane (David Alpay) and everyone else has been searching far and wide for is in extremely low supply. In fact, “there is only one dose,” as Vaughn tells a tied-up Damon.
The development does provides another avenue for Vampire Diaries to up the ante as the cure continues to dominate the fourth season. Who came across the cure first? It’s Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) who discover the very small vial of the cure. Here’s the kicker: Since Silas has been frozen for centuries, the only way to get the cure out is for them to raise Silas — like Shane’s been saying all this time.
And that unwelcome return? It’s Katherine! It’s been a while since we last saw the conniving vamp and it was truly a shock when she re-appeared in the waning moments of the episode. She’s the one who makes out with the cure but not before putting Elena’s brother Jeremy in an impossible situation, with Silas’ centuries-old hands around his neck. The episode ended with Jeremy lying motionless by Silas’ grave: Is he really dead?
The top highlights from Thursday’s latest installment:
8:02 p.m.: How does Vaughn introduce himself to Damon after kidnapping him at the end of the last episode? Staking his neck. Why not.
8:06 p.m.: Meanwhile, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is still locked up inside. (How many days has it been now?) And Caroline and Tyler invite him to help them translate Jeremy’s tattoos. Klaus does a Klaus-like thing and teases his knowledge of the language the ancient symbols are inscribed in. Talk about torture.
8:10 p.m.: “There is only one dose.” It’s confirmed. Things can’t be that easy for the Mystic Falls gang, now can it?
8:15 p.m.: Here’s a warning sign if there ever was on: Bonnie will kill Shane herself if things don’t go smoothly.
8:17 p.m.: Klaus reveals his knowledge of the “one dose” problem while on the phone with his sister Rebekah (Claire Holt). Before Tyler and Caroline realize the info he’s feeding his sis, they immediately shut off all communications. Is it too late?
8:18 p.m.: “Is that you?” “No. Is that you?” “No.” It’s not a huge scene but it’s a funny moment between Vaughn and Damon when they come across a dead body in the middle of the island. Oh bad boys, gotta love ’em.
8:26 p.m.: Stefan asks Rebekah if Klaus is telling the truth about the “one dose” dilemma. Stefan says what any good-natured person would say, that he feels pretty dumb for actually holding out hope that there could be enough for him too. (And yes, Stefan would still give the dose to Elena if he gets his hand on it.)
8:28 p.m.: “Your attachment to your friends will be the end of you,” Vaughn threatens to Damon as they get ready to face off.
8:29 p.m.: Meanwhile, Elena comes to grips with the fact that the cure won’t be flowing and available for all who desire it. And yes, she and Stefan realize that.
8:31 p.m.: A cool fight between Damon and Vaughn takes place but it’s too short.
8:35 p.m.: Bonnie is reunited with her Grams! “You are this close to bringing me back to life … for good!” Grams tells her. Jeremy tells Bonnie that she’s hallucinating her grandmother and it’s heartbreaking. “Silas, he was in your head. He’s trying to control you,” Jeremy explains. “You need to block him out of your mind.” It’s how Shane saw his wife in the cave.
8:39 p.m.: Klaus digs deep and figures out that Caroline doesn’t want the cure (she prefers her vampire self over her old self). “We’re the same, Caroline,” Klaus says. Caroline tasks Klaus with showing his compassion toward Tyler. “Mercy … for Tyler? Very well …” Klaus tells Caroline to have Tyler get out of dodge. And just when she thinks Klaus is turning over a new leaf, she realizes that he’s just giving him a head start.
8:45 p.m.: Caroline and Tyler have another moment before Tyler gets ready to take off. “We will find a way,” Tyler reassures her. “What if we don’t? Tell me you’ll never think of me again,” Caroline asks. Tyler says exactly what she wants to hear, but let’s be real, they will always have something. Something also tells me Tyler won’t be gone for long — if at all.
8:48 p.m.: Shane is struggling to survive down in the dark cave and he admits to Stefan that all he wanted to do was to bring back his family. His wife Caitlyn appears again after he apologizes for not doing everything he set out to do.
8:50 p.m.: Jeremy and Bonnie come across the cure, “fossilized in stone,” and it’s not what Jeremy was expecting. There is only one way for Silas to unfreeze, they have to “wake him up.” Yikes! (After Jeremy attempts to break apart Silas to get to the cure, Vaughn stabs Bonnie from behind. Oh Jeremy…
8:56 p.m.: Epic Vaughn and Jeremy fight, with an epic Elena saving the day! “You OK?” Elena says oh-so-nonchalantly to Jeremy.
8:57 p.m.: Oh, remember how we thought it was Elena saving Jeremy? It’s actually Katherine! “I forgot what a brat you were!”
8:59 p.m.: Is Jeremy dead?! In other news, Katherine makes out with the cure. But wait, is Jeremy dead?!
Some notable quotables:
- Damon: “Come on man. Do I look like I know anything about tattoos? Look at my skin, it’s flawless.”
- Stefan on being a vampire: “In the long run, even the good parts kind of suck too.”
- Damon: “Life sucks.”
