Three months after airing on HBO, Vice documentary Killing Cancer has helped generate more than $2 million in cancer research donations.
The Mayo Clinic is announcing Thursday that it has received $1 million in gifts from more than 10,000 donors that will go toward research at its Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. Vice Media CEO Shane Smith personally matched the first $1 million in donations, resulting in more than $2 million in total gifts for the Rochester, Minn., health care company.
“The money raised in the Killing Cancer campaign will have impact right away, helping advance cancer research and finding cures for patients,” said Mayo Clinic president and CEO John Noseworthy, adding that “Shane’s reporting on the emerging field of viral therapies to treat cancer, combined with his generous philanthropy, will have a positive impact on the lives of many patients.”
HBO aired Vice’s special report on Feb. 27. The documentary explores three cutting-edge cancer research labs — including one at the Mayo Clinic. It follows the doctors and researchers who are making inroads in modern medicine and features some of the cancer survivors who have been saved by those medical breakthroughs.
“I would like to thank everyone who donated, and I hope that it helps in developing the remarkable techniques that are being advanced at the Mayo Clinic,” said Smith. “Going forward, Vice will not only remain committed to this type of story but also [to] helping wherever we can.”
The Killing Cancer campaign set a record for online donations at the Mayo Clinic, with 30 percent of gifts made online. Many of the gifts came from new supporters, which the Mayo Clinic attributes to Vice’s younger audience.
