Fox is making a big push for its new John Mulaney comedy.
The network has released a 22-minute special, Mulaney: An Opening Act, in which the former Saturday Night Live writer previews the network’s lone freshman comedy series.
Mulaney, which Fox has compared to NBC’s Seinfeld, opens with the comedian performing stand-up and stars the comedian-actor in a series loosely based on his life. The show follows an aspiring comedian coming of age under the influence of his crazy boss (Martin Short) and roommates (including SNL alum Nasim Pedrad). Elliott Gould, Zack Pearlman and Seaton Smith co-star.
The series was originally developed at NBC before landing at Fox with a six-episode pickup. Fox in May added an additional 10 episodes to the order for Mulaney. The series, from Universal Television, is one of only three new comedies Fox has ordered for the 2014-15 season. It joins midseason fare The Last Man on Earth and Weird Loners as well as animated entry Bordertown.
Check out the Mulaney special below. The series debuts Oct. 5 at 9:30 p.m. as part of Fox’s new Sunday night lineup.
