The New York Rangers’ loss to the Los Angeles Kings in double overtime on Friday struck a double blow for NYC mayor Bill de Blasio, who’d made a bet with L.A. mayor Eric Garcetti before game 1 over whose team would win the Stanley Cup.
L.A. got the championship and a fan-filled parade on Monday, while de Blasio had to face the music and sing Randy Newman‘s “I Love L.A.” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! — and proved that he should stick to politics rather than singing.
Appearing via satellite from Times Square, the good sport sang along with New York City’s 52nd Street Project student chorus, looking incredibly awkward and embarrassed, waving his arms around uncomfortably.

“You look like a counselor at the worst camp ever,” Kimmel laughed. “This is a hostage situation,” his victim grimaced in response.
De Blasio also had to treat a studio audience in Los Angeles to New York City hot dogs from Gray’s Papaya, as Garcetti sat alongside Kimmel in his Hollywood base.
If the Kings had lost the finals, the L.A. mayor would have had to sing “New York, New York” as his penance. Instead, he relished in the victory at the Kings rally earlier in the day, telling 18,000 fans at the Staples Center, “I look forward to watching Jimmy Kimmel tonight and hearing my colleague Bill de Blasio sing ‘I Love L.A.’ You’re all lucky you don’t have to hear me sing!”

Caught up in the excitement of the celebration, Garcetti went on to exclaim, “They say there are two rules in politics: Never be caught with a drink in your hand and never swear. But this is a big f—ing day!” This caused the crowd to erupt in cheers and laughter…and Kimmel to later call him “Mayor Potty Mouth.”

Hockey was the theme of the night on Kimmel, as L.A. Kings players Justin Williams and Alec Martinez — who scored the game-winning goal — were also guests on the show, along with the Stanley Cup itself, which they lined with salt and filled with margaritas.
