‘Virgin River’ Vaults to Top of Nielsen Streaming Rankings

Netflix’s Virgin River moved to the top of Nielsen’s streaming charts for the beginning of December, displacing The Crown.

The drama based on Robyn Carr’s Virgin River novels took up 1.79 billion minutes of viewers’ time in the week of Nov. 30-Dec. 6. It moved up from third to first in the Nielsen rankings; season two of the show debuted Nov. 27.

The Crown didn’t fall far, slipping one spot to second and still accounting for 1.46 billion minutes of viewing time. The Mandalorian (994 million minutes) stayed put in fourth place, and the Disney+ series spent its sixth consecutive week in the rankings. That ties Netflix’s Lucifer, The Queen’s Gambit (which dropped out of the top 10) and The Great British Baking Show and Amazon’s The Boys for the longest such streak among streaming originals.

Streaming platforms contend Nielsen’s methodology doesn’t capture the full scope of viewing on devices other than TV sets. Nielsen also only measures U.S. audiences, not those in other countries.
